Artist Review: Chords of Truth

Hello everyone! I'm back with another artist review.

This time, I'll be reviewing and sharing music by Jason Garriotte (Chords of Truth), which has been remixed by producer Acid Nab.

Enjoy the music - and check out the remixed EP here!

-----

Remixed or not - there are some great tunes coming from Chords of Truth. The lyrics are incredible and tell a very straightforward story, and Jason's voice becomes one with you. He tells it how it is, and does so skillfully and with great depth. It's like listening to the words of a wise friend.

Anyway, the particular project I am writing about is Jason's remixed album, which has been re-created by producer Acid Nab, which describes the re-stylized version as "Laptopfolk".

The remix has been brilliantly done. While the producer has added a great touch of his own style and interpretation, he has stayed true to the artist's original work, vision, and stories. To be perfectly blunt, this is great music to just zone/chill out to, not have to think, harness the energy, and just enjoy the ride.

There is a true and utter serene beauty to "What Life Is About", from the moment the song begins. Personally, "Tune Your Mind" is my favourite tune, especially from a lyrical standpoint. Though just like every song on the EP, the beat is great, too.

Either way, this is one EP you won't want to miss!

Make sure to check it out here

Review of Etiera

Hello everyone. MTL back.

Today, I will be writing a review on the music of Etiera, an alternative rock band from Uniontown, Pennsylvania (another PA artist, like me!)

Listen up everyone, and hope you enjoy the review!

-----

Etiera is unforgettable, as they are described. I have already listened to their song "Reach" three times now, and will probably continue to do so. 'Close to Nothing' is also absolutely impossible to press that pause button on!

Etiera is made up of lead singer/guitarist Josh Morris, drummer Derek Showman, and bassist Johnny Rugola. They are a part of Goldirock Records, and currently reside in Pittsburgh, PA (they originally come from Uniontown). On their Facebook, the band lists their interests as "the Sky, Space, The Stars, The Sun, The Moon, Love, Life, God/Jesus, Nature, Traveling, Family, Friends, Somewhere Beautiful, Oceans, Ambiance, Words, Abstraction, Dreams, Guitar Noise, Growth, Decay, Synthesizers".

Besides playing it, the band writes, records, mixes, and produces their music themselves.

Etiera is certainly a band that is very creative and artistic with their music. Lead singer Josh has a voice that stays with you, and gets inside your head & heart. His vocals are very distinct, and memorable. He has such a clear, resonant tone.
The craftsmanship of the music itself is fantastic. The bass and drums keep a great steady rhythm. The guitars have a loud, presence. It's obvious to tell these guys are beyond professional.

Some of the music riffs - especially the guitar openings to "Reach" and "Drowning Inside" just get stuck inside your head, and stay there.

They make music to make you feel. That's very evident when listening.

They make music to move you.

Review of SKiLTRaX

Hello everyone. I bring you another artist music review.

Today, I'll be reviewing the music of electronic artist/producer SKiLTRaX, from Connecticut. Stay tuned, read up, and enjoy! Make sure to check out the artist's music here

-----

"I have always had a gift for music, but I never had the skill to play instruments well enough to translate it.  I had all these great tunes running through my head and no way to let them out.  Now that computers can create any sound you can imagine, I can turn my ideas into reality without needing the manual skill and coordination necessary to play an instrument.  Is that cheating?  Maybe, but all I care about is that I can hear whatever I dream up without any limitations"
-SKiLTRaX, in his own words.

As stated before, SKiLTRaX is a dance/electronic artist from Connecticut. He describes his process as being simple, he makes music that he likes to hear. A very honest statement. The music he makes is extremely likable to more than him! At this moment, I am listening to "Big Bad Wolf", and can't take my headphones off!

This is the perfect music to listen to if one is looking for great trance/electronic music to just zone out to and enjoy. It's fantastic for dancing, and just letting go to the feel of the beat. It's great music to trip out to. 'Protagonist' happens to be my favourite. Those drums just pound away into my brain, making me feel like one with the rhythm.

What's not to love?

Listening to recently released track, "Fantasmic" is like stepping into a whole new world. 'Elevate your mind' speaks the truth of this track.

It's highly obvious when listening to the music of SKiLTRaX that he puts a lot of work into creating these killer tunes. The high amount of creativity and musical love is also extremely apparent.

Go check out the music of SKiLTRaX today. You will fall in love.

Interview with Devyn Rose

Hello everyone, I'm back.

Today, I will be interviewing Devyn Rose, an R&B/Hip-hop/Pop singer from New York, New York. Read below, and hope you enjoy!

Make sure to check out the artist here.
More of her social media links will be posted below the interview.

-----

How long have you been making music now?
Professionally, I have been making music since I was 16.

At what point in your life was the defining moment that made you realize what you wanted to do, as a musician?
It’s not really one specific defining moment, I have been singing since I was about 7 years old in the choir and It was like I was immersed into music. Growing up I was introduced to different types of music through my friends and people I was around, I wasn't allowed to listen to music in my house, my parents were really strict. I love to learn and explore different types of music, So I may wake up to some Whitney, ride to school listening to some Bone thugs and Harmony, while in the studio listening to some DMX or something like that. So under that type of influence, I would consume all genres I set out on a mission to make what I felt was true music.

What was your first project? How have you grown since then?
My first demo was at 16, it was the first time I was in a real recording studio with a real producer. I was so nervous but this was my plan and I knew what I wanted and since then I have grown vocally and lyrically and my sound has changed a lot.

What do you feel sets you apart from the crowd?
When it comes to me as an artist, I am unpredictable, I do all types of music, I have no boundaries…My style is unique in that I am a multi-genre artist who was mainly influenced by Bone Thugs n Harmony and Whitney Houston.

What type of music/artists have influenced you and your music?
Bone Thugs N Harmony, Whitney Houston, Minnie Riperton, Deniece Williams, among many others.

If you could describe you and your music in five words, what would they be?
I would have to say my music is eccentric, hard-hitting, powerful, inspiring, edgy.

How do you describe the style/genre of your own music?
My style and genre is an eccentric new generation mix of pop, r&b, hip-hop and more. I do whatever inspires me!

What is the inspiration for your music?
Every song I write is something a family member, a girlfriend or I have been through – they are real life stories, I do it that way simply because I want to be able to connect with anyone who listens to my music. I want the audience to relate and connect with me emotionally, like 'yea, Dev went through the same thing I am going through'.

What type of mindset do you get into before you enter the studio to record? Do you do anything special to prepare yourself?
I go into the studio with the mindset like, yeaaa I’m going to rock this record; I strive for perfection in recording, it has to feel right and sound right. I do my vocal warm-ups and I am ready to go! Just me, my manager, and the engineer.

What do you feel is the best piece of music you've created? Why do you choose this one?
The best music I have created so far in my opinion is the Holiday EP “Holidays At Home” the holiday season is my favorite time of the year, I recorded and wrote 12 songs in 7 days for the EP.

What other artists, musicians, and producers have you worked with?
I’ve worked with multi platinum producer Dame Grease, Kurupt, Royce Da 59, French Montana, Max B, Jae Millz, N.O.R.E., DJ Webstar, and more!

What plans do you have in the near future for music release/recording? What sets this upcoming project apart from your previous ones?
I have and I am still growing as an artist, vocally, lyrically, instrumentally, there is no telling what to expect from me. I plan on releasing another EP, touring, collaborating with more artists, and more!

Any upcoming tour plans?
Yes, no dates set just yet, but we are in the works for top of the year!

What are your thoughts of the current state of the music industry? How do you feel you fit into it?
The industry is what it is – I am doing my own thing so I fit in perfectly!

Where do you see yourself as an artist five years from now?
I see myself as an internationally known artist, entrepreneur, and actress.

Any words of advice for young/aspiring musicians?
Never ever give up! :-)

Anything else?
I would like to thank anyone and everyone who has supported me and also shout out those who have doubted me on my journey thus far, Smooches to my Rose Garden. :-)

Review of Black and Gold

Hello, everyone. MissTaintedLove back, with another artist review.

This week I will be reviewing "Black and Gold", a female fronted pop/party band.
Black and Gold can be found and booked through earcandy, a UK based entertainment agency.

-----

"Black & Gold has thrilled audiences at events throughout the UK and abroad. With a mix of your favourite pop party music, this female fronted band will keep your party buzzing all night"
-earcandy's official site

There's no doubt that Black & Gold is fronted by an extremely talented female vocalist. From the samples the website provides of the band, it's obvious to tell that Kelly - the vocalist - is very versatile, and is obviously able to sing a wide variety of styles.
The girl can do great justice to Micheal Jackson's 'Beat It', Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way', and Katy Perry's 'Firework' - plus more. I especially love the band's clip of 'Born This Way'. It's a fun, rockin' twist on an already awesome song.

The muscianship of all members is excellent. Great timing with the drums. Awesome riffs from the guitar.

Their set list for events lists much more music, including (but not limited to) Queen, Ce lo Green, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, Duffy, Amy Winehouse, and much more.

It's obvious from the short music/video clips and the outstanding reviews that Black & Gold is a rockin' good time. You can check them out here at earcandy.

Band Review: The Striped Bananas

Hello, everyone. MissTaintedLove back with a new review.

This time, I will be reviewing the music of Baltimore's The Strip Bananas, a psychedelic 'basement' rock band.

Hope you enjoy the review, and make sure to go check out their music here

-----

"Concocted from the brain waves of three social conglomerates, the Striped Bananas are pushing into new sounds for exquisite people-"
-From the band's Facebook

The Striped Bananas is made up of:

-Duncan Shepherd: vocals, guitars, and production
-Chantelle Lussier: vocals, keyboards, and bass
-Andrew Lowdon: drums and backing vocals
Duncan Shepherd is also the main songwriter, unless it's specified otherwise.

The Striped Bananas' influences include The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Beatles, Nirvana, Neil Young and more. You can find a complete list on the band's Facebook page. Out of all of these, I especially hear the Beach Boys and Nirvana have had a definite inspiration on the band's style. But hey, that's just my opinion.

They list their favourite interests as jamming, composing, having fun, and gigging.

The band right now is offering a 10 song Debut Album. After listening to every song, this is my review and opinion of the music. One thing I must say first off, is that I feel this music has been very well recorded. It sounds very professional to me, even if it actually was done in a basement.

----

1 -Broken Wings: This has to be my favourite track on the album. It has that perfect "beginning, right out of the gate" feel to it. Though it starts slower, you can feel it picking up (especially the drums) into the first chorus, and it's taking you with it. "Where are we going? We've been here already."

2 -Take My Hand: This song has two really, really great things going for it - catchy, tight lyrics, and some really sick bass licks. This is most certainly a 'feel good' song, or at least it feels so to the brain.

3 -Mind Desert: If you know me, you know I loved guitar distortion. That main guitar lick has me from the beginning, draws me in, and keeps my attention. The guitar in this song is kickin', and I'm in love with the groove of this track.

4 -Brain Waves: The way the voices blend together in the beginning is beautiful, and gives way into a song that stays beautiful. This song has a very strong lyrical presence, and some great-sounding acoustic guitar, to boot. I especially love where this song goes at 2:10. Effects? Bring it on.

5 -Memories: "They never fade away, even when the seasons change." I am in love with this song lyrically. "Times keep changing now that I've lost her," is my favourite line, a section from the chorus. Lyrically speaking, this song is rather catchy.

6 -Lady Lazarus: Though this song seems to have the most mysterious feel to it than any other song on the record, but it is still rather enjoyable. More than worth the listen. It'd be interesting to know the backstory of the lyrics to this song.

7 -Into Your Eyes: "Death steps in for a drink". This talking line at the end got me, for sure, and the feeling of it stayed with me.

8 -Stop Reality: It slows down here, in this song. That's evident with the strong presence of the acoustic guitar, and a chilled out strum. The flowing, story-telling vocals really help bring it home.

9 -Ghost Girl: This is another song I'd like to know the backstory to. It is very intriguing lyrically, and brought forward brilliantly through the vocals and accompanying music.

10 -Our Life Flows: The beginning of this song is truly beautiful. The songs of the instruments blend together  in the ears, and prepare beautifully for the vocal's appearance. Though this is the shortest song on the album, it is the perfect song to end it with.

School, week four

Hello, friends.

As you may know, I am a student at Berklee College of Music online. I am in my fourth course with them (doing a certificate program). The current course is all about songwriting techniques.

I am in week four of the course, and already I'm seeing improvements in my song and story writing techniques. Like always, Berklee's courses are well-written, well-prepared, and highly insightful. I always learn with them.

Let's see how the rest of the course goes. This one triggers my creativity, and I love it.

If you love music, head on over to Berklee now to learn and grow.

You won't regret it.

(And no, nobody at Berklee asked me to write this. I'm doing it all on my own accord.)

Review of Morning Fame

Hello, all. MissTaintedLove back.

Today I will be doing a musical review of the band "Morning Fame", an alternative rock band from Toronto, Ontario.
Enjoy the review. You can check out their official site here

-----

"Morning Fame is an alternative rock band that defines what happens when four uniquely talented and passionate musicians come together and develop a strong musical chemistry"
-From the band's Facebook

---

Morning Fame is made up of members Vik Kapur (vocals), Joe Liranzo (guitarist), Alan Dennis (drums), and Rob Giberti (bass), and the band is from Toronto, Ontario of Canada.
Some of the bands influences include Gin Blossoms, R.E.M., The Cure, Soda Stereo, and U2. They define their genre on their Facebook page as pop rock/alternative rock. They also describe their sounds as, "ringing arpeggiated guitar, the plaintive vocals, the intricate drum lines, melodic bass lines".

The band has a few great tracks uploaded onto Youtube, which are actually live versions of their songs. "Turn to Stone", "The Colour of Sound", "Joker's Game" and "Time" are all live songs that can be found on Youtube by the band.

The live videos are great visually. Very interesting to watch, and good effort has been put into them.
It is obvious from watching them perform that the band has energy, enthusiasm, drive, and talent. Their appearances fit well with the genre and the music they play.

The band's music has a great rock, familiar, catchy sense about it. It is played and written professionally - that is obvious to see and hear. They compliment each other well, and fit great together.
"Time" happens to be my favourite song to listen to from this band. Great lyrics, great music, great feel, great performance - great everything.

'It's hard enough to breathe, when time has got a hold on me.'

Lyrics in all of the songs are well written and captivating.

Devoted and Beautiful

This quote came up across on my Facebook (and lists the creator and the owner of the copyright in the corner, it's not mine).

No matter what you play, sing or write - even if you're only an avid listener - read this quote, and reflect on what it means to you.

Band Review of The Swank

Hello, everyone.

MissTaintedLove is back, and this time, I have another music review.
This time, I will be reviewing the band known as The Swank. Hope you enjoy the review, and please go check them out!

You certainly won't regret it!

-----

"Imagine pairing a band with N.E.R.D.'s progressive urban alternative sound, Nirvana's grit and an emcee armed with Lil Wayne's wit and penchant for creativity. That doesn't exist, but if it did, it would sound something like The Swank"
-From The Swank's official site

The Swank describes themselves as an urban rock band, or rather, "hip hop swag with a punk rock attitude". They also declare that they are "doper than tiger blood and bath salts". They are from Athens, Georgia, and list their influences on their Facebook as "beer".

Definitely has me interested.

The band consists of four members...

El, guitarist
Possum, drummer
Sway, 'hype man extraordinaire'
And Son1, the front man

"Swank or die"

Even this lesbian has to admit these guys are cute. Yeah, I know that doesn't pertain directly to the music. This is my blog. Deal with it.
----
I must say my absolute favourite track from these guys is "Ass", (which you can listen to above, it's the first Youtube video I posted of them). Everything about this song is awesome. The distorted guitar, the steady beat, the dope lyrics, and the clear rap vocals.

I might mentioned I had to listen to 'Ass' twice.
Anyway... moving on.

"Amanda" was the next track I listened to. I may mention first... the music video for this is sick. And by sick, I mean good sick, not flu sick. Think before you read.
Like the first song, the instrumental - guitar, drums, etc. - is kickin'. I am a rather large fan of anything rock oriented, and anything rap oriented. These guys are great to listen to. But I'm getting distracted here.
"She's the melody in my love song", was my favourite line from 'Amanda'. This song was also worth a second listen, and more.

-----

"Ape Shit" has some awesome, attention-catching drums to start the song out. The lyrics are very catchy, and the guitar riff is addictive.
The moment the word 'weed' is mentioned, that means I automatically have to give it a second listen.

-----

I know Black and Yellow isn't an original by this group. But Black and Yellow happens to be one of my favourite songs (it has nothing to do with the fact I'm from Pennsylvania. Yes, yes it does).
The freestyle they've done to this song is worth every listen.

-----
I get asked to review and interview a lot of bands. Only half the time is the genre something extremely unique that is also something right up to my alley, aka, what I listen to on my own accord without being asked.
This band def. is right up my alley.

You guys had me the moment you mentioned hip hop + punk.

And everyone, I'm commanding you - go listen to these guys. If you like what I like, you'll certainly like them.

You can check them out at the links below:

Artist Interview with Jake Haze

Hello everyone! MissTaintedLove here with another artist interview.

Today, I will be interviewing Jake Haze, who is a hip-hop artist from Allentown, Pennsylvania. I hope you enjoy the interview; you can check out Jake's music here

-----

What do you feel sets you apart from the crowd?
I try to have a message, whether one to wake you up from this false reality we live in, or whether to I'm trying to make you laugh out loud.

If you could describe you and your music in five words, what would they be?
Crazy, Clever, Relaxed, Melodic, Unpredictable.

How were you first introduced to music in your life?
My father and mother. My mom had the best taste in music, I still listen to all the artists she used to listen to. Plus my father was in a band most of my youth. Watching him do something so cool, that he loved was amazing to me. Also, I came out to be a natural, too.

At what point in your life was the defining moment that made you realize what you wanted to do, as a musician?
When I turned 25. I have been making music my entire life. My father was in a band, and my 1st song I ever wrote (at 4 years old) was a rap song, to my parents' horror. By 18 I was an accomplished producer in my area. Due to increasing pressure from my family and my girlfriend at the time, I was forced to quit my passion, instead sticking to producing music in the background for other artists of all genres, from NY, PA to Puerto Rico. By the time I was 24, I was miserable with the decisions I had made, mostly because of listening to other people. So, I decided to resume my heart's desire once more, this time without stopping.

How long have you been making music now?
Since I was literally 5.

What was your first project? How have you grown since then?
My first full album was called "Soul Law". I released it at 15. It sucked. The production was decent, but the delivery and content sucked. I have grown to become a professional now, there is almost no comparison from then to now.

What other artists, musicians, and producers have you worked with?
Many artists from PA & even nationwide. Whitney Peyton, Phillup Banks, Devin Hailey (son of K-Ci of Jodeci), Ed Monsta, Rushen Rulett, Jon Qwest and many more.

How do you describe the style/genre of your own music?
Alternative Hip Hop. It's Hip Hop with a lot of singing, blending of other genres in it, with lyrics that rap doesn't ever touch on.

What type of music/artists have influenced you and your music?
The Beatles, Nino Bravo, Mocedades, Lionel Richie, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Dr Dre, Camilo Sesto, Air Supply, Barry White, Mana', La Ley, Louie Armstrong, the Bee Gees, Guns and Roses, Nirvana and of course the greatest ever, Michael Jackson

What is the inspiration for your music?
Life. This world. I just take a look around, see the way I and everyone else lives, and it's inspiration.

What type of mindset do you get into before you enter the studio to record? Do you do anything special to prepare yourself?
I have to immerse myself in the lyrics of the song I am about to record, to be able to capture the emotions of the lyrics. I also have to be sober at the time of recording. There's a time for partying, and there's a time for work. That's how serious I take my craft.

What do you feel is the best piece of music you've created? Why do you choose this one?
It's a song from my current album called "Wet Dreams". It's very sexy, its unlike anything you've heard from me, but also it's something you'd expect.

What can you tell us about your current album? How does it differ from any of your previous projects?
It was the album that took the longest to complete. I think this reflected my personality and mind-state better than any other album I've ever released. It is way more mature, and polished than any of my previous efforts.

Where do you see yourself as an artist five years from now?
Living on tour. Making fans on every corner of the world. Changing lives through my music.

What plans do you have in the near future for music release/recording? What sets this upcoming project apart from your previous ones?
My immediate next project is a joint mixtape with my brother Rushen Rulett, tentatively called Army Of Two. His style completely contrasts against mines. He's cocky and aggressive, while I'm more witty and relaxed. But the outcome of our combined styles is amazing

Any upcoming tour plans?
We're looking at hitting the road in January. Reading, Pittsburgh Philly, Jersey, All over NYC, New England and even Delaware.

Any words of advice for young/aspiring musicians?
Make your own money, build your own fanbase. Invest and promote yourself aggressively. Don't wait for the record label to scoop you up magically, that is not the way to financial independence (contrary to popular belief). Don't believe the hype.

What are your thoughts of the current state of the music industry? How do you feel you fit into it?
I don't, so I try to stay out of it. I don't believe in 4 (now 3) companies owning 85% of the market and media of the music industry. It's all about what sells, not about making good music anymore. So I'd rather stay independent.

Anything else?
I want to give a big shout out to my manager, Joanne Gass. My producer Art of 44js. My entire Red Top City/44js family. Also to all my supporters out there. Follow me on twitter @jakehazeredtop and on www.winningsince85.com

Music review of Pia Dean

Hi, guys!

MissTaintedLove here with an artist review today.
I will be reviewing Pia Dean, an indie artist from Cambridge.

"Pia is a new UK indie songwriter who loves creating partnerships between words & music. Pia likes to give each track its own identity, which reflect influences that cross various genres."
-Pia Dean's Reverbnation page

Hope you enjoy the review! You can check out Pia Dean's music here

-----

"Sometimes I wonder what's wrong with me
"Another walk down crazy heart-break street"
-Pia Dean, "Achilles Heal"

Ever heard 'Achilles Heal'? You should.
After a long listening session through the music of UK artist Pia Dean's music, it happens to be my favourite track, and the one I just couldn't help but replay over and over.

All of her music is like that.

Pia Dean is a songwriter that makes good use of extremely talented background vocalists on her music. Some of them include Caroline Langford and. Nikki Dine-Hart.   The voices are beautiful, clear, and have strong, amazing tone to them. When listening to her music being sung, you feel as though you're listening to an old familiar friend tell a tale. Even though it's not her voice, her personality jumps right out of the music, grabbing your attention as soon as you press 'play'.

The backing music complements both the singer(s) and the lyrics themselves. One can tell that talented musicians were involved in the making.
Her music videos are also stunning. Very high quality, and tell a tale that fits with the music.

"Brand new day, and it's looking good
"Feels like I'm alive again"
-Pia Dean's 'Another Maybe'

Some of Pia Dean's influences listed include Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, U2, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, KOL, Beyonce, Jason Mraz, Adele & P!nk. Her genre is self described as a mix of pop, alternative, R&B, and acoustic.

Fairly accurate, I believe.

All in all, Pia Dean is an artist that you must add to your music library. It is not complete without her!

"Gone For Days" Band Interview

Hello, all.

This is MissTaintedLove and I am back with another artist interview for your enjoyment!
Today I will be interview Jesse Wayne Hatch of the band "Gone for Days".

Hope you enjoy the interview! You can check out the band here

-----

What member of the band am I talking to?
Jesse Wayne Hatch, the guitarist/songwriter.

Who are the band members, and what do they each play?
Chris Taylor: Singer/songwriter
Jesse Wayne Hatch: Singer/songwriter/guitarist
    Justin Pacy: Drums
   Chris Dickman: Bass Guitar

How did the band come together?
I had a production deal in place with a producer in MO who had done trust co., breaking Benjamin etc. with my singer from the band I was in on MCA records. Long story short, he needed to back out so I was left with all these killer tracks with no singer. Chris Taylor was the singer for NH band Vegas Temper who I was familiar with through mutual management. I call Erik Baker and said "What's Chris Taylor doing?" I sent him some tracks and he demoed them in NH while I was in Nashville TN . We like what we heard and after getting industry attention with the songs I knew we had something so I left Nashville for Manchester to Record the record and put the band together.

The name "Gone For Days" - how did that come about?
When Chris and I first met it was in Springfield Mo to record. He told his wife he would be gone 4 days. Our eyebrows pirked up but I was opposed to have a number in the name. It's soooo over done.  So we came up with 'for days' and the name can hold different mindsets or emotions - so it stuck. I loved it immediately. Chris is lyrically awesome so he tends to come up with great names.

If you could describe the band and your music in five words, what would they be?
Strong, catchy, emotional, energetic, real.

What do you feel sets you guys apart from the crowd?
Our songs. They are well thought out and inspired. Hooks, people. Hooks.

What is the inspiration for your music?
Life and emotion.

Have you guys ever worked with any other notable musicians, or on any other projects/collaborations?
I've worked with a lot of people over the years. Chris Daughtry worked with me on gettin' a deal years ago. That was def. a highlight. The band has opened for the likes of Fuel, Filter, Hinder,Taproot, Staind, Shinedown , Godsmack, Candle box, saving Abel, Stone Temple Pilots, and Seether - to name a few.

How were you first introduced to music in your life?
My father played in a rock band in the 70's and early 80's so I was exposed to it early on. I had my hands on a guitar when I was five.

At what point in your life was the defining moment that made you realize what you wanted to do, as a musician?
First time I played a huge venue for national I was about 16. Sold.

What do you feel is the best piece of music you've created? Why do you choose this one?
Definitely 'Guilty Pleasure'. I've written and recorded with Oscar winning songwriters and producers as well as written songs for major label bands and the reaction I've gotten from 'Guilty' is second to none.  A Freind of mine in the biz, Charlie P - a rep at Universal - always said to me " it can take one song to change your life".

Tell us about your current album? What sets this project apart from the others you've done before?
Well, Jon Wyman - our producer - is the first thing. Best studio experience I've ever had and can speak for the other members as well.  Second I think its the peak of songwriting for Chris and I, as well.

What plans do you have in the near future for music release/recording? What sets this upcoming project apart from your previous ones?
Well, we just released the EP with seven songs after a overwhelming response at radio with 'Guilty Pleasure'. I personally have a record dropping with EMI in a couple months  from Future Leaders Of The World. They are a former Epic Records band who's single "Let me Out" went to number 2, I believe, on Billboard charts. I wrote 2 songs on the record with singer Phil Taylor recorded in Nashville, with Producer Jon King and mixed by John Lecompt of Evanescence.

Any upcoming tour plans?
Yup. Hittin' the road for the midwest next month. We are playing the NASCAR race at the Chicago Sugerland speedway on Sept. 15th and hopefully catching up with Ten Years in Ohio on the way back.

Where do you see the band five years from now?
Hopefully successful, but there is no crystal ball with this stuff.

What are your thoughts of the current state of the music industry? How do you feel you and the band fit into it?
It's bad. Having worked for major labels in the past, I'm still really connected on what the state of the industry is. But I also can use that to my advantage as well. The band fits well in that the songs are top ten material in my opinion and can hold up to the other stuff that's out there pretty well. We are hard working and stay away from heavy drugs and drinking which is the reason many bands fall apart.

Any words of advice for young/aspiring musicians?
Be ready for disappointment or failure. But don't stop of its what you know in your heart it's what you want. You have to be built for the biz. It's hard out there.

Anything else?
All set I think. Request 'Guilty Pleasure' on Octane and your local FM stations!

Interview with Beau Wigington

Hello everyone!

MissTaintedLove back with another artist interview. Today, I will be interviewing Beau James Wigington. Beau is a Delta Blues artist hailing from North Carolina, currently in California.

"Beau Wigington is a musician that is not afraid of showing emotion. His deep lyrics are backed my addictive melodies. In his music you will see the art of simply telling a story, conveying an emotion, finding a new fancy, or even speaking your mind."
-From the artist's Youtube page

Hope you enjoy the interview, and check out the artist!
You can find his music here

-----

What do you feel sets you apart from the crowd?
My Beard. Just kidding, I think that there are many different things, my sense of humor, my lack of music theory knowledge and my love of having fun. If there were one thing that sets me apart from other musicians out there, it would have to be my lyrics. I like to tell stories and I feel like in today’s day of music the story can easily get lost in a beat or a sweet track. I try to write good hooks to catch listeners’ ears and never let them go, but above that I try to tell a good story.

How were you first introduced to music in your life?
Some people are born to sing and some people have mothers who buy a video set called “Born To Sing”. I remember always seeing these videos on the shelf and being obsessed with the mouth that was on the box. I think it was a subluminal message that stuck with me just seeing those videos year after year. I never watched the videos but I will always remember them as being the thing that made me want to sing. My parents let me take guitar lessons when I was young knowing I would quit, but I came back to it later. Also I think that road trips ingrained me with southern roots, listening to “Call Me The Breeze” on trips from Colorado to Mississippi as a kid.

At what point in your life was the defining moment that made you realize what you wanted to do, as a musician?
I started writing songs when I was younger but they were mostly about girls that I thought were cute and girls that broke my heart, but when I got into college I started writing songs about things that I was having problems with in my life and when I would play them for people they would relate to it. If there were one moment that made me realize I wanted to make music, it would have to be playing in a coffee shop with my band in high school and seeing people sing along and smile when a song would start. Just knowing that someone could relate to what I was saying enough to sing along got me hooked.

If you could describe you and your music in five words, what would they be?
Jack Daniels Sour Mash Whiskey. I love whiskey, and I feel like my music could be described as a glass of Jack on ice, it is strong at first but the more you listen the easier it goes down. I also write about whiskey all the time. My mom always tells me that I write about it too much, but she wants me to write a song called “Whiskey is My Warmup”. The back story of this is that she was at a show of mine a few years back and asked me if I was going to warmup before I went on stage, and I drank the rest of my glass and said “Whiskey is my warmup” and went on.

How do you describe the style/genre of your own music?
I am a huge fan of the Delta blues, but my music is more blues/rock with a hint of country. My love of writing folk stories seeps into my songs as well. I have been told it is like The Black Keys eating gumbo.

How long have you been making music now?
I have been playing since 3rd grade but I would have to say I haven’t really been making music people might like that long. I think that when I hit high school is when I started really making stuff people could get into. So I guess around 10 years now give or take a few.

What was your first project? How have you grown since then?
Well, my first project I was ever in was a band that was named Broken Hollywood and we played our first show in my parents attic. Since then I have worked hard to develop my voice and playing guitar. I have spent many years learning from other musicians and also music industry people as well. I think that starting to work on the business side of the industry has given me the most insight on what it takes to start making it your life.

What other artists, musicians, and producers have you worked with?
I work with an artists called Austitron, aka Austin James Williams a lot right now doing some co-writing and hopefully will continue to for many years to come. I was in a band with Aslan Freeman and Chris Carr who are now in the band Future Ghosts, rocking it out on the east coast. For this EP I have been working with Matt Trivigno from Killingsworth Recording Company. He has been producing the EP and Tomas Costanza has popped in the room here and there as well and laying down organ parts for the EP. I worked with many great musicians in the studio, Clark Singleton (Bass), Jackson Hunt (Keys), Chris Carr (Banjo), Loren McNames (Slide Guitar), Anthony Mancini (Lead Guitar) and Ralph Alexander (Drums). I seriously couldn’t have done it with out everyone that came in. I am hoping to start working with more artists out here and possibly get into the songwriting game as well.

What type of music/artists have influenced you and your music?
I love the story of Robert Johnson, selling his soul at the crossroads to be the best blues player out there. His music has been a pretty big influence on me, it is very matter of fact and I try to write like that. Jack White is probably one of the biggest influences in my music life. I love the passion that he has for music and the way that he writes just makes me wish I was half the musician he is. One of my favorite songs, and a big reason what I want to play the type of music I do, is a song Top Yourself. I heard that song when I was in a really bad relationship and the lyrics, “It takes sleeping with a snake like you to rip apart my soul” changed my life. I never had the guts to write something like that but ever since I heard that I have tried to be very truthful in my lyrics, and not hold anything back.

What is the inspiration for your music?
Music is what keeps me going day to day because it is my escape. What happens in my life that I don’t know how to deal with, and the people that pop in and out of my life have a huge impact on what I write. I write music because if I didn’t write music, I would probably be locked up somewhere. Listeners inspire me a lot because I just want to write music that people will really enjoy.

What can you tell us about your current album?
How does it differ from any of your previous projects? Well it is a 6 Song EP that is a taster for the new direction that I have been going in. Before I was pretty acoustic driven, but this is full band! I really just embraced my love for the blues and just wanted to make some awesome songs that people could dance to and just really rock out!

What type of mindset do you get into before you enter the studio to record? Do you do anything special to prepare yourself?
It depends on what the song is about. One of the songs on this EP I had a conversation with a girl that put me through a lot of pain, hung up the phone and jumped in the vocal booth. Another song I made sure that I had someone to flirt with in the studio when I laid down vocals. I try to get to the same place that the song was written in. Pre-Studio I try to just not think about going in, because recording is very hard for me, because I really love feeding on the energy of an audience. When I am recording I try to imagine that I have to really empress the microphone, a dumb little thing but it helps.

What do you feel is the best piece of music you've created? Why do you choose this one?
I think that it might not be the best song I have ever written, but it means the most to me. I wrote a song called “Lookout” a few years back about a sailing trip that my father and I went on. We were going to sail from Ocracoke Island to Cape Lookout out in the outer banks of North Carolina. It was supposed to be a 40 mile trip but as we got to the light house at Lookout the wind started to pick up and the sun was going down, and it was right about this time that we noticed that we had to go another 20 miles because of all of the shipwrecks around the cape. The wind was whipping at our face, the boat was diving under each wave soaking us both and we had to motor the whole way in. It took forever and we each thought that we were going to die but didn’t want to say it. We some how managed to make it into the cape with out getting thrown off the boat or losing our last fin on the prop. I wrote the song Lookout after that trip and every time I sing it, I am back on the boat that fateful night. I just love it.

What plans do you have in the near future for music release/recording? What sets this upcoming project apart from your previous ones?
I am trying to put out my first fully produced EP this year called Dirty Lies, but we are currently in the fundraising stage. Insert plug here, please check out our indiegogo page at www.indiegogo.com/dirtyliesep2012 . I have been working on really honing in on my sound that I want to make, and I feel like this is the right direction. I have always loved the blues and southern rock so I spent a long time making these songs the best that I could. I also wanted to put out a fully produced product as well because I have never done it before and wanted to give people the chance to hear what I hear in my head.

Any upcoming tour plans?
The plan for now is to just build a following out here and then hit the road hopefully early next year. For now I plan on touring the city of Los Angeles playing at as many new places as I can because I love meeting new people.

Where do you see yourself as an artist five years from now?
If everything works out I will be on the road full time, and hopefully booking festivals. Over the next years I really want to focus on finding new ways to put a spin on the blues, and working with great writers and musicians. I five years the greatest thing that could happen in my mind is playing a show to a room full of people singing along.

What are your thoughts of the current state of the music industry? How do you feel you fit into it?
I think that we are going to see a huge shift over the next few years. I think that it is sad that artists are not making any money from the music they make. The internet has made the music industry an amazing thing for fans, with all the access to music, but for the artists you are one in a billion and you never know where your music is. I hope to be a road warrior, just bringing the spirit of southern rock to different places. I also am going to be trying to get some placements this next year with the EP which I feel is a huge way for people to get music into new ears.

Any words of advice for young/aspiring musicians?
Play what you love to play. I have found that the more I love to play the songs that I write, the more people love to hear them. Also be nice, a bad attitude will not get you anywhere. Making music can be very hard on you but you don’t have to let that make you into a mean or egotistical person. People who like you will like your music much more if they like you as a person. You never know who that person you blow off at your show is.

Anything else?
Music today is a very hard game and the people who have the power to keep new music alive are the listener. I know that there are a lot of people out there that say “Support local music”, and they are the people that are keeping the music industry alive. Everyone is on facebook, twitter and all the social networks and these are the places that you as a listener can make or break a career. So the next time someone sends you something, instead of skipping over it to play Farmville, why don’t you just let it play in the background while you grow your farm empire. Who knows you might like what you hear.

My Interview With Phil Jones

Hello everyone - MissTaintedLove here with another artist interview.

This time, I will be interviewing Phil Jones of the Phil Jones band. Phil Jones is described as "a new American rock sound from Hawaii".  He is a UCLA graduate, having attended graduate school at USC.
As a Californian from British descent, Phil moved to Hawaii in the year 2000.  His song writing is meant to "inspire positive change, religious tolerance, racial equality, peace and personal evolvement in a fast paced and changing world".

He lives with his family in Kauai, and in addition to his music career, he runs a spa/resort/private home throughout Hawaii.

Hope you enjoy the interview! The music of Phil Jones - and more about the artist - can be found by going here

----

If you could describe you and your music in five words, what would they be?
Someone told me I sounded like "Leonard Cohen meets the Beach Boys". That has a nice ring to it, although the beach/surfing comment is mostly because we are from Kauai. I think the use of the slide gives our music a Hawaiian sound as well.

What do you feel sets you apart from the crowd?
I am particularly pleased with my songwriting these days. I think the fact that I am now older, have had children and have been through a few bumps and bruises along the way, my lyrics and songwriting has really improved. As far as musicianship, I feel very fortunate to work with Kirk Smart who is masterful at any instrument you put in his hands, Eli Sandoval who's vocal range covers about four octaves and Cary Valentine who is world class drummer. I am also always impressed with the mixing my good friend Paul Christie does and my masterer, Dave Allen, is a saint and a die hard work-aholic who never stops until we are 100% satisfied!

How were you first introduced to music in your life?
My parents used to listen to the Beatles and I pretty much scratched every record they had. I also was a big Jackson 5 fan and then pretty much everything I could get my hands on until now I played.

At what point in your life was the defining moment that made you realize what you wanted to do, as a musician?
I have always been very into good music so I think it was always a passion but I think when I stopped doing cover songs and sang in my own voice and my own songs, is when I really got the bug.

What do you feel is the best piece of music you've created? Why do you choose this one?
I really like "Gone" which I will be releasing shortly. Although it is a fairly simple melody and has a light lyrical message of love, I like the groove a lot. But each of my songs, I must say, are special to me, otherwise I don't release them.

What plans do you have in the near future for music release/recording? What sets this upcoming project apart from your previous ones?
I am releasing the video "Gone" in a week or two and am currently shooting the video for the song "Roots". After that is finished, I will be compiling the eight songs I have recorded in the last two years onto an album and releasing that. After that, I am going to record and release single/videos for the next few years every other month or so.

Any upcoming tour plans?  N/A
I have been discussing playing the World Peace One Tour with the promoters starting in a few months but we'll see.

Any words of advice for young/aspiring musicians?
I highly suggest learning the new technologies because they really hold the key to self empowerment in your musical career. They are also a heck of a lot of fun regardless of what your plans are.

My Interview with the band Bro-Core

Hello, MissTaintedLove back with another artist interview - hope you enjoy!

This time, I'll be interviewing Joey from the band Bro-core. Bro-core is a pop-punk band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

You can check them out here, and the interview below.

----

Who are the band members, and what do they each play?
Well - Joey is the singer, Jason plays guitar; so does Steve. Casey is the bassist, and Kevin on drums.

How did the band come together?
Well, that's kind of complicated. Casey was in a band with Kevin in the past, Kevin was in a band with Jason, Jason use to be in a band with Joey and Joe worked with Steve awhile back.

The name "Bro-Core" - how did that come about?
Actually, we didn't come up with it completely. It's a term that's been thrown around in the Hardcore scene for several years. It's hyped pretty negatively, just search it on urbandictionary and you'll see.
When it was first brought up we thought it was hilarious, since we were already over using the term "bro" and unfortunately do relate with parts of the description.
But really we just want to take in the name and make it our own thing, we're just a group of bros playing music together bro'ing it up.

What is the inspiration for your music?
Our everyday lives are our main inspirations for this music. We really are just playing music, whatever comes out you know. We try not to pull to much influence from our inspirations... I guess it may happen naturally sometimes.

If you could describe the band and your music in five words, what would they be?
Super-Happy-Fun-Band-Time? That's a difficult question!

What do you feel sets you guys apart from the crowd?
We can all definitely agree that the way we handle our genre definitely sets us apart. There's totally stuff out there that sounds like us but whats different with us is we aren't aiming and directing ourselves toward any specific genre. We're just playing how we feel and releasing music we like and that's all that matters to us!

How were you first introduced to music in your life?
It's always been there for all of us. Steve was rocking back and forth in his car seat to bad to the bone on the way home from the hospital the day he was born. It had to be some sort of rhythmic thing in the womb. We all just came to it.

At what point in your life was the defining moment that made you realize what you wanted to do, as a musician?
For Joey it was definitely a no brainer, growing up in a house and family full of musicians. He learned how to play guitar by watching his dad strum away on a left handed guitar and learned just about everything else from anyone who would teach, from his retired professional musician grandma all the way up to his step father who is a career drummer.
For Kevin it was just pure boredom, it started in High School. He picked up the Drums and just progressed from there.
Jason came into this following a unhealthy obsession with Blink 182. He wanted to follow their lead and be just like them.
Steve only learned how to play guitar so he could play Kansas for his old man and impress him, and for Casey it's the same story except it was Crazy Train.
Really the only answer to this is every moment of our lives has built up to this, we couldn't imagine not being a musician of some sort.

What do you feel is the best piece of music you've created? Why do you choose this one?
Everyone can agree with Legacies. We all love listening to it and playing it. Joey was writing it for a friend of his who committed suicide a few years ago and while in the process another close friend of his passed away. He really spilled his heart into it.
You can really rock out to Legacies, and we think it's extremely easy to relate with, since most people have lost someone close to them.

Have you guys ever worked with any other notable musicians, or on any other projects/collaborations?
I think it's safe to say, we're all playing with each other as the most notable musicians we've ever worked with. We're all extremely happy with each other and couldn't imagine working with anyone else.

Tell us about your current album? What sets this project apart from the others you've done before?
This album really is the first for the most of us. Kevin and Jason have done a few Hardcore and Metal albums but for the rest of us, this is the first we've recorded.

What plans do you have in the near future for music release/recording? What sets this upcoming project apart from your previous ones?
Record some more songs sometime in the next few months and release a full length album. Then it's back to square one start writing again.

 Any upcoming tour plans?
Play shows, as many as possible. You can check it out on our Facebook! Like us, so you know whats going on and when!

What are your thoughts of the current state of the music industry? How do you feel you and the band fit into it?
What music Industry? We feel there really isn't much of a industry anymore. It's almost like a community now, everyone knows each other and works together. It's a magical thing.

Where do you see the band five years from now?
Hopefully still doing what we're doing, just with more people listening.

Any words of advice for young/aspiring musicians?
Never give up, work together, and stay strong.

Anything else?
Add us on Facebook! And tell your friends!
